Ring Doorbell Review 2022

Ring is a very trusted brand among video doorbells – they were the first to introduce video doorbells to the general public and they continue to bring out innovative products in this area. There are a number of Ring video Doorbells available. One of our favorites for 2022 is the Ring Video Doorbell 3.

In this article, we will review the Ring Video Doorbell 3 in detail and also make brief mentions of 3 other Ring Doorbells and their most attractive selling points.

What Is a Ring Video Doorbell

A Ring Video Doorbell is a doorbell that has a built-in video camera. It lets you see, hear, and speak to the person at your door, even when you’re not home. It is battery-powered and can be connected to your existing doorbell wiring or operated wirelessly.

The video quality is excellent, and the two-way audio is clear. The motion detection is reliable, and you can even get alerts sent to your phone when someone rings the doorbell.

If you’re looking for a doorbell with a built-in video camera, this Doorbell is a great choice. It’s easy to install and comes with everything you need to get started.

Design

The design of this video doorbell is a little on the chunky side. It’s also rectangular in shape – we know some of you might prefer the more traditional round doorbell so this might be off-putting. It does come with two different face plates, so Ring has tried to make the product a little customizable.

Installation

Ring offers the option of both wired and battery-operated doorbell units. We really appreciated this flexibility. Everything you need for installation is included in the pack – the screws, wire extensions, and anchor plates for installing at an angle. While a physical instruction manual is provided, there is also an app available for download to assist you with the installation.

If you use the battery-operated option, it’s a good idea to charge the battery pack overnight before you start the whole setup. We suggest you buy an extra battery to use in the unit while the other is charging.

The app will guide you through the installation process in a very user-friendly manner. It takes you step by step and will give instructions on how to link the Ring app with the doorbell. One thing that the app doesn’t tell you is that when you are linking the doorbell to your Wi-Fi you need to choose the 2.4 GHz channel on your router. 2.4 GHz is better suited to a video doorbell device even though the 5GHz channel is faster. The Ring video doorbell then takes a full 5 minutes to update the Firmware – be patient, there isn’t a problem, it just takes that long!

Now you can physically install the doorbell. The app will prompt you to watch a video that will show you how to use the Modes provided. These are super useful and allow you to sync together all of the Ring devices you might own and change any privacy or security settings.

It all goes pretty smoothly up to here but then you hit a snag. There are no prompts to tell you how to install the actual unit. You will need to search around in the settings to find the instructions. This can be a little frustrating, especially if you’ve never installed something like this before. Once the instructions are found the process is easy. You will need to use the screwdriver provided to mount the bracket as there is no way you can use a drill to screw the doorbell into place – the design doesn’t allow for it. Keep this screwdriver stored in a safe place! You will need it if you have to take the camera down and replace it for any reason.

The faceplate felt a little on the cheap side which was disappointing. It also didn’t fit as neatly onto the unit as it could have.

NOTE: The Ring doorbell doesn’t come with a chime. The unit will ring when the button is pressed by a visitor but if you like that traditional chime sound, you’ll need to purchase that separately.

Using the Ring Video Doorbell 3

While the design is slightly underwhelming, the functionality is not! The quality of the video is fantastic, and the camera has a great field of view.

Video Quality

The Ring 3 has a 1080p HD lens with a 160-degree field of view. The camera is capable of advanced motion detection so you don’t miss anything going on outside your front door. What’s great about Ring in this regard is that, through the app, you can set up special attention zones as well as adjust motion detection sensitivity. This means that false alerts are seriously reduced.

Audio

The Ring 3 has excellent 2-way conversation functionality without any notable lag. You never feel like you are missing what your guests are saying or find yourself talking over them. The audio quality is good albeit a bit tinny sounding.

The only con in the audio function is that there are no pre-recorded responses available.

Playback

The Ring 3 doesn’t show you a list of video clips that you need to scroll through to find the event you are looking for; it presents the clips in a timeline that you can scrub through. This is a great way to organize recordings and we really like this feature. It does however chew through your battery life.

You are able to store your recordings on the Ring cloud service – this is a subscription service with a monthly fee attached.

Neighbors

When you set up the Ring Video Doorbell 3 you can also join Neighbors. This is a community security app that provides real-time alerts from neighbors and the local police based on the zip code of the suburb that you enter with setup. Neighbors encourage you to share videos and comments with the goal of making the community safer. Take note that once you’re in, you’re in – there doesn’t seem to be a way of deleting this service once you’ve joined. This feature could also have a few privacy issues.
